We all know that having bright pearly whites is important for first impressions (and in my opinion, overall self-confidence). Imagine a world where you didn’t have to Facetune edit your teeth for Instagram! Just kidding, but seriously, seeing a bright white smile in the mirror every day does feel 12/10.

The Smile Brilliant kit includes whitening syringes, desensitizing syringes and the ingredients to make your personal tray mold along with a pre-paid envelope to send the molds back with. That’s right, they use molds of YOUR teeth to create your whitening trays and therefore they’re really comfortable to wear while you’re whitening. One thing I was surprised about when I got my personalized trays back was that they were flexible and soft (I was picturing the harder Invisalign plastic type situation) and once you put them in, you can barely feel them.

I hate going to dentist appointments

I don’t know about you, but there’s nothing I hate more than smiling into the mirror and feeling like my teeth aren’t as white as they once were back in the days before coffee, tea, wine, life, etc. Actually, wait, I know what I hate more – the inconvenience of having to go to a dentist appointment. If you’ve ever talked to your dentist about getting your teeth professionally whitened and then cried in your car when you found out it was going to cost half of your rent, I know how you feel. With Smile Brilliant, the entire process is done completely at-home and requires no dentist visits and it’s only $149 for the T3 sensitive system (so less than I’ve spent on a random Target run…)

My teeth are SUPER sensitive

So just like the majority of millennials in search of a whiter smile, I’ve tried Crest White Strips and then shuddered in pain the next day when I couldn’t even drink or eat anything because the sensitivity was so bad. I know this doesn’t happen to everyone, but it was enough for me to never use them again. Sometimes, even some whitening toothpastes have left me with sensitivity afterword! But sensitive-teeth-havers, not to fear! The desensitizing gel included in the Smile Brilliant system is MAGICAL.  After whitening (and rinsing/brushing), you simply apply the desensitizing gel to the trays and put those on for about 20 minutes. This was a super important part of the teeth whitening system for me personally, and was shocked that I felt literally no sensitivity throughout this process!

I have stains on my molars (grosss I know.)

Thanks to those lovely old school metal-mouth braces I had in high school, I have dark stains on my molars. One of the perks of using the Smile Brillant teeth whitening tray system is that you ultimately whiten your entire smile rather than just covering the front few teeth like with White Strips. Since Smile Brilliant works to not only whiten your teeth but to also remove surface stains, and covered my entire smile back to the molars, this is a huge plus! The stains on my molars lightened up a little bit after a few treatments.

How to Use the Smile Brilliant System:

To whiten, simply brush your teeth with JUST water, apply the whitening gel to the trays and put them on, and then set a timer. You can whiten anywhere from 45 minutes to 3 hours, but they recommend starting with the minimum time and working your way up to avoid sensitivity (and I agree). Each syringe holds about 3-4 applications depending on how much you use each time. I recommend starting with less gel than you think you need for the first application (because you’ll quickly realize when you’ve used too much). Once you’re done whitening, rinse your mouth and trays and brush your teeth again with non-whitening toothpaste. Then, apply the desensitizing gel to the trays and put those on for about 20 minutes. This was super important for me and really helped — I felt literally no sensitivity throughout this process!

Personal Pro Tips:

I recommend whitening at night because after each treatment I had some white spots on my teeth. These totally went away by the next day, but just something to note (you probably don’t want to whiten before a first date or something like that). You also cannot eat or drink for an hour after using, so it’s best to whiten after dinner.

One challenge for me was finding the time to whiten consistently, so if spending an hour and a half a night whitening sounds overwhelming to you, don’t fret! Smile Brilliant recommends that you do the treatments every day or at least every other day when you start. So, you’ll want to start your whitening kit on a week where you aren’t super busy (trust me, a week where you have 2 work dinners and a birthday party may not be the best time to start).

Timing is important, because each treatment lasts about an hour and a half or more if you leave them on longer. In my case, I don’t typically finish dinner until about 8-8:30 pm on weeknights and I like to go to bed by 10ish since I wake up early and work out in the morning. I found it most efficient for me to squeeze whitening in right after dinner. I would put in a whitening tray as soon as I finished dinner and wear it while cleaning up, picking out my outfit for the next day, and reading/watching tv. I would then wear the desensitizing tray while I finished up getting ready for bed.
